On the morning of April 14th, Louisiana Derby (gr. II) runner-up Tom’s Ready breezed five furlongs at Churchill Downs, his second workout at Churchill in preparation for a start in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) on May 7th.

The son of More Than Ready, who also finished second in the LeComte Stakes (gr. III) earlier this year, went the distance in 1:01.60 while working in company with the four-year-old maiden winner Lemon Drop Title. According to reports from Churchill Downs, Tom’s Ready started six lengths behind his stablemate and posted fractions of :12.60, :25 flat, :37.40, and :49.40 before finishing on even terms and galloping out six furlongs in 1:15.40.

“It was a great work,” trainer Dallas Stewart was quoted as saying in a press release. “It was a nice, even, strong maintenance work, and he finished the last quarter without any urging. I’m really happy with the way he worked and the way he handled the track.”

Tom’s Ready’s next workout is scheduled for April 21st or 22nd.

“We’re proud of the way he handled things this winter,” said Stewart. “He had three good races down in New Orleans and he came out of them good and he looks to be healthy knock on wood. We don’t take anything for granted. We liked him as a 2-year-old, but it’s a big step to where we’re headed.”
