Horse of the Week 3-30-16: California Chrome

Congratulations to the amazing California Chrome, whose remarkable victory in the $10 million Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) on March 26th at Meydan has earned him the title of “Horse of the Week” on The Turf Board!

In a poll on The Turf Board’s Twitter page, California Chrome received 89% of the votes, with Louisiana Derby (gr. II) winner Gun Runner and Dubai Sheema Classic (UAE-I) winner Postponed receiving just over 5% apiece.

In the Dubai World Cup, California Chrome settled close to the pace while racing wide, and despite the fact that his saddle started to slip back halfway through the race, California Chrome took command turning for home and drew off powerfully to win by 3 3/4 lengths in the track-record time of 2:01.83 seconds. By claiming the winner’s purse of $6 million, California Chrome has surpassed Curlin as the highest-earning U.S.-based racehorse of all time. California Chrome’s career earnings now stand at $12,532,650.
